A booklet from Lake Street School for the 1923-1924 school year. The booklet was given to students as a souvenir of their year at the school. The booklet includes a photo of their teacher (Walter Petersohn), a group photo, and the names of the students.

Lake Street School was located on the southwest corner of Lake Street and Gary Avenue in Roselle, at the Roselle-Hanover Park border. The school began in 1897 with a one-room schoolhouse. It was part of what would become School District 20.

The early history of the school is somewhat murky. A Daily Herald article titled “100 and counting” (published on July 29^th, 1997) says the school began in 1897 and "the school was in an unincorporated area known as Ontarioville, on property that now is in the Keeneyville district." The article says the school was later sold and used as a chicken coop. The students from Lake Street School then went on to attend Keeneyville School.

But an older version of the history, according to a Daily Herald article from May 3rd, 1990 ("Keeneyville School closing ends an era"), says the original building was built on Lake Street in 1898 and was torn down in the 1930s, to be replaced by a larger school.

According to an archived history of Keeneyville School District from the Keeneyville School District webpage from June 20, 2017, the school "initially had one teacher and nine students between the ages of 5 and 12. In 1914 Lake Street School received its first multi-room building." The first teacher was Eunice P. Batten.

A two-room wooden building was finished in 1938 at the corner of Lake Street and Gary Avenue. A 1938 Daily Herald article titled “Lake Street School improvement is benefit to fifty-three pupils” says before the new building, the students had been taking turns (one group in the morning, one group in the afternoon) to use the school because of overcrowding. The school was two buildings connected by a hallway. The area around the school became known as Keeneyville because of Albert F. Keeney, who had purchased much of the land in that area.

A four-classroom brick building with a library, a kitchen, and bathrooms was finished in 1949 and remained as the basis of the school until its final days; more classrooms were added in later years. An October 21, 1949 article from the Daily Herald ("Keeneyville PTA bazaar at new school Sunday") announces the new school building dedication would be held on October 22nd. This schoolhouse was to become known as Keeneyville School.

In its last year, Keeneyville School housed all the kindergarten and 1^st graders in District 20. Keeneyville School closed its doors in June 1990. The school had structural problems, and there was worsening traffic at Lake and Gary that made parents and teachers worry for the children’s safety. The plumbing dated back to 1949, and the school's well stopped functioning for some time during the winter of 1988-1989. The building no longer stands.
