- Description
- Photographs of the old village hall of Hanover Park, along with the old Public Works building.
Prior to a village hall building, the first village board meeting was held at Schneider's Grill (a restaurant that opened in Ontarioville in 1951) in 1958, and subsequent meetings were held at the fire station or the Rodewald family farmhouse (which has since been razed) on Barrington Road near Laurel Avenue.
In 1961, Emil Rinne donated part of his land on Lake Street for the construction of a village hall. Barney Dahl and Hanover Builders offered to build it. The building was completed in Fall 1961. According to one source, the old village hall was called the "Barone Building" (after Village President Lou Barone). Among the rooms were a meeting room, a mayor's office, a village clerk's office, other department offices, and a jail cell.
The Public Works building was next door and housed city equipment. The Public Works garage was located at 2121 west Lake Street. A caption on the back of a 1974 photo of the garage reads "The present estimated capital value of our trucks, autos, etc. is $150,000.00 with a 1974-1975 budget of $100,000.00. This building and the one at 1700 Jensen Boulevard is inadequate to store this equipment."
Construction on a new $1.4 million municipal building complex began in 1975, and the first board meeting held in the new village hall (the one still standing today) was in 1976.
